Welcome to the K. Holly Photography Blog!

I'm so glad you're here!  My name is Kristen, and I'm a West Michigan wedding & lifestyle photographer. This all started with my parents' old Canon AE-1 camera, a Graphic Design degree, a passionate urge to capture the beauty around us, and a love for life, love, light, color, and spirit.  I share my life with my husband Jamie, dog Lexi, family, friends & all the amazing people I get to meet through my photography.  Their stories grace these pages. I can't even begin to tell you how much I love my clients and the work I do. I hope it shows!  :)

See the portfolio link above for samples of my work and be sure to check back to see what's new - I update several times per week with my most recent sessions, weddings, and ramblings.  For information on sessions, collections and booking, head on over to the main website - there's a link above for that too.

I'm glad you're here - get comfy and have a look around.  Through these pages you'll get to know me, my life, and my photography style a little better.  And hopefully, it'll inspire you to look at life and this amazing world around us a little differently too  :)

With much love, Kristen  :)

{ Out of Office }

Jamie, Lexi and I hopped in the car yesterday morning and spent the day on the road to our hometowns.  We’re spending the week with our families and enjoying the 4th of July.  We hope you’re doing the same!  :)  I’ll be checking my email and voicemails periodically, as time (and internet service!) allow.  I’m hoping to get some work done… but no guarantees.  It’s pretty nice to see our families, considering we only get to see them a couple times a year  :)  Thanks for understanding!  Happy 4th of July!!

Jenn + Paul { married! }

Jenn and Paul are married!  You may remember them and their cute, fun style from their engagement session earlier this spring.  Their wedding was full of fun, colorful details, personal touches, and beautiful, meaningful sentiments. It was a beautiful day, everyone was in good spirits, and ready to celebrate their love.  Jenn looked beautiful, and Paul was handsome, surrounded by their families and friends.

jennpaulwedding-154

She wore her favorite comfy shoes, and had very unique and Jenn-appropriate hair.  How cute is this - there are curls of film threaded throughout!  This artful magic was done by my good friend, fabulous hairstylist Erin.

jennpaulwedding-205

And the cutest necklace!

jennpaulwedding-114

Love all the green!  All of these gorgeous peonies (including her incredible bouquet, above) are from their own garden!

Despite the joyful celebration, there was an air of remembrance as well. Jenn sadly lost her mother suddenly just a few months ago.  From what I’ve heard, she was an absolutely amazing woman, wonderful mother, and a giving and caring person.  Her spirit is carried throughout their wedding details, and will forever be part of the church.  In the detail shots, you will see banners hanging from the church ceiling, big quilts up front on the wall, and a baptismal banner.  These are all things her mother had recently made as gifts for the church.  Jenn and Paul chose not to add any decorations in order to let these beautiful, colorful pieces shine. This orange, green, and white quilt: Jenn’s mother was originally going to make the bridesmaid dresses out of the orange fabric, the groomsmen vests out of the green fabric, and Jenn’s wedding gown out of the white satin.  Since she never got the chance, Jenn made this quilt to represent her on her wedding day.

{ Melissa + Gracie + Elizabeth }

While I was in Minnesota for Missy and Tony’s wedding, I took my lovely sister Melissa and her two beautiful daughters out to play.  It was a little chilly out, and VERY windy, but the girls had a blast.  Gracie was a total ham for the camera, wanting to do model poses, jumps, and other fun stuff.  I ate it up!  :)  Lissa was herself - cute and pretty, flaunting that great big smile of hers.  Izzy was just happy as can be, like she always is.  She’s the happiest baby I’ve ever met.  She’s always content, and then when you smile at her, you get an ear-to-ear grin and a squeal.  Is there anything better?  :)

I smiled, laughed, and teared up while I was going through these images.  I love and miss these three SO much.  Living two states away is hard for us, I only get to see them a few times a year, and it’s always way too quick.  These girls are growing up so fast, and sometimes I feel like I’m missing it all.  But spending time with them over that weekend was SO wonderful, we enjoyed each others company every minute.  I’m so proud of my big sis, she’s become such a wonderful mom, and such a great friend.  Her two wonderful girls will always have each other, just like she and I do.  This session was amazing - the three of them got a chance to be together as a family to play and bond with no distractions, no rules, no noise… nothing but each other.  It was perfect.

This is the very first image I took - Gracie’s head is cut off because I was just shooting for exposure - but how cute are they?!

These next few…. Gracie and Lissa have this little dance they do, they’ve done it for-evah.  It involves shaking hands, high fives, little jigs and dips and hip bumps.  And singing, and a LOT of giggling  :)

{ Lilies and Spidies! }

If spiders eek you out, you may want to avert thine eyes…

I’m not a fan of the eight-legged creepy critters, at all… but I thought this was a really beautiful sight to wake up to.  Although I DID keep a safe distance in case she jumped.  So I was just minding my own business, photographing my pretty blooming lilies…

khollyflowers-10021

There she is!

khollyflowers-10111

What’s that?  You want to see her closer?  But of course:

khollyflowers-10101

I’m sorry, was that too much?  Okay, back to the pretty lilies:

Nicole Glenn - Spiders creep me out! Cool pictures though! Love the water drops on the flowers...feels so fresh.

Heather R - So.....did you kill the spider??? LOL

Missy + Tony { married! }

Alright, peeps. This is a long one.  Why?  Because it’s awesome.  And because they’re my old high school friends, and the wedding takes place in my hometown in Northern Minnesota  :)  Last 4th of July, I was chatting with Missy and a group of friends at the Gilbert parade.  While we were catching up on life, I mentioned that I was a photographer and had started my own business in Michigan, and she excitedly told me that she and Tony were getting married next summer, and asked me to shoot her wedding.  Absolutely!!  If she could fly me back home, I was in.  We both squealed with excitement, hugged on it, and clinked our plastic cups. Deal!  :)  Now, she had never seen my work, and really had no idea what to expect.  There are only a handful of photographers in the area, and their style is… well, not quite like mine.  ;)  They take beautiful photographs, don’t get me wrong.  They’ve been doing it for a long time, and they are all VERY good at fine portraiture.  I, on the other hand, work more as a photojournalist. It was hard to break everyone of that traditional style - every time I held my camera up to my face, people would straighten up and put their “picture smile” on.  But that wasn’t what I wanted… I wanted the real stuff.  Real expressions, real laughter, real moments.  I wanted to tell Missy and Tony’s story, the way it was happening, unfolding in front of me. And okay, yeah, I wanted portraits too… but I wanted MY kind of portraits.  You’ll see  ;)   Missy and Tony, I hope I’ve done you and your wedding justice.  It was an incredible day - it was fun, it was crazy, and it was absolutely real and true. I had a smile plastered across my face all day long - I loved every single minute of it.  Even getting harassed by the groomsmen  ;)

The day started at the church, with the girls getting into their gorgeous orange dresses, and helping Missy into her beautiful white lace gown.

Jamie and I recently finished the lower level of our house, which includes my new office.  I love my new workspace, it’s bright, comfortable, and organized!  A perfect place to spend the hours post-shoot processing and editing.

Over the weekend, I brought home a lovely little orchid to bless the space and breathe in a little more life and beauty. Naturally, I had to photograph her  ;)
