Baby Kiahn :: Birth

On November 26th, I got the phone call…

I was at my office wrapping up my last few tasks and clearing my desk, my very last day of work as a Marketing & Design Manager. The timing couldn’t have been more symbolic… the end of a chapter, and the official birth of the next. Most of you know this already, but as of Thanksgiving, I’m 100% Photographer! I worked at my “day job” and grew K. Holly Photography on the side for my first full year. It was time to stop struggling to do both, and focus on my passion. My business has grown faster than I ever could have ever imagined, and I have so much to be thankful for. I truly do believe I have the best clients in the world – I feel such a strong connection to each and every one of you. Thank you for trusting my vision and commissioning my work, and having me be part of these wonderful times in your lives… births, family milestones, engagements, and weddings! I feel overwhelmingly blessed to have shared these personal events with you – like this little miracle the day before Thanksgiving…

Ann and Steve were at the hospital, and ready for me to arrive. We had talked several months prior, and we had all been anticipating this day. Baby Kiahn was ready to enter the world! I hugged all of my co-workers for the very last time, grabbed my camera bag, and raced to the hospital. Ann wanted me to be there before things got hectic, and I was so glad she planned for it. We got some touching photos of the two of them in their last moments as they got ready for parenthood!

Soon things got a little scary – Kiahn’s umbilical cord got pinched, causing complications. They quickly decided to proceed with a cesarian section and get him out safely. They prepped Ann for surgery, and Steve and I got dressed up in gowns for the operating room.

I was able to photograph the entire birth. I’m not sharing those photos here on the blog, but I have to say – it was incredible. I was wide-eyed, frozen in position where the nurse placed me, shooting quickly and continuously. The surgery was fast, with practiced precision, and utterly amazing. The room was transformed with baby Kiahn’s voice ringing through. He had arrived! 9 lbs, 8 oz, 22 1/4 inches, and every bit perfect!

They quickly got him cleaned up, Steve cut his cord, and they wrapped him up and brought him over to Ann so she could see him. Teary eyed, it was truly love at first sight. (My eyes are tearing up as I’m writing this!)

In the nursery, Steve stayed right by his side. He talked to him the entire time, telling him stories and giving him is first life lessons. It was one of the sweetest things I had ever seen… Kiahn even opened his eyes a couple quick times to see Dad.

He spent the rest of the evening in the Special Care Nursery. He wasn’t alone – he was allowed two visitors at a time. He had a family waiting outside that was very eager to meet him!

I went back in the morning to see him again and get a few pictures of the new family. They were so happy, getting the hang of holding and feeding him, calling other family members with the news, and just enjoying their new little addition :)

Congratulations again, Ann and Steve! Thank you for having me, I feel so honored to have witnessed his first moments of life.  Much love, and best wishes!
