Ten years ago, my life changed in more ways than I ever could have imagined. Ten years ago today, I both lost my father and crossed the stage at my high school graduation. Two life changing events, one charged with positivity and energy, the other heartbreak and loss. Like baptism by fire, I felt like I had been thrown into the world alone. I was on my own – sad, scared, anxious and excited, and somehow, empowered.
It changed the way I see the world. There are so many things we can’t control, but so many we can. Love your loved ones, your family, your friends. Tell them. Love them, share your life, laugh hard, smile lots, cry real tears. If there is something you’ve been wanting to do, do it. Now is the time.
You never know when you will be crossing that stage.

EGHS class of 1999, congratulations on ten years.
Dad, I love you and miss you. I’m thinking of you today and it’s heavy on my heart.

(There is more on this on my facebook page, if you’re feeling up for sharing a few tears with me.)
